Social BookmarkingInternet search marketing professionals all understand the importance of link building and for many of them it is part of the daily routine to look for link opportunities over the Web.

In a previous blog post about link building (One Way Link Building with Free Press Releases), I was reviewing my top 10 free press release distribution networks. Today, I will go over a different method of acquiring free one way links; social bookmarks!

There are dozens of social bookmarking websites out there on the Web. Although it is time consuming to register for a new account and build a public profile, it can be very rewarding to have a network of social bookmarking accounts in place. Social bookmarking websites usually allow you to have a public profile and add your own links to each of them but there are internet marketing professionals out there that might also be looking to share their social bookmarks with people like you. Using the right strategy, you could benefit from having other people bookmarking your website. In addition, having an account with multiple websites is like getting some sort of insurance. What if you were putting all your energies on one website and it was going out of business or changing it’s linking method? I’m sure you get the idea of what the consequence would be.

At this point, I’m sure all this stuff sounds like link building heaven but as always I recommend diversity. Don’t put all your energies at the same place and this includes social bookmarking websites as well. A lot of them are using url redirections, dynamic links or won’t publish “do-follow” links so if you are doing this for the link building value, be selective with where you will be spending your time and efforts and be patient. Newly created profile pages don’t have any Web authority and it will take a while before they have any effect. I would not recommend to open accounts with social bookmarking websites and only publish links to your own website either. Social bookmarking websites such as StumbleUpon for example, are know for deleting accounts for this particular reason. In other words, they don’t really want people to use their service as they would use their own browser bookmarks, they just want as many users as possible to publish as much junk as possible so their network grows bigger and they get more authority. This is the reality of the Web today. You want to create pages about your company? Fine…so link to other websites that are talking about your company as well and it will make your page more relevant.

In a few weeks I will post a list of social bookmarking websites that are using “do-follow” links so bookmark this blog and visit again for an update.

Cheers,

Frank
